The big boom "Irezumi" caused by Kuniyoshi Utagawa's "One of the 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden" (1827-1830) series. The hero's paintings, which show off their gorgeously inked skin, have created many followers, and historical figures and even popular actors of the time are now painted with colorfully decorated skin. Designs drawn as symbols of morale, courage, and strength, such as lions, dragons, peonies, large snakes, and Fudo Myo, have survived the ban in the early Meiji era and have been passed down to lovers who roam the modern city.
歌川国芳の《通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個》（1827〜1830）シリーズが巻き起こした一大ブーム「刺青」。絢爛豪華に墨を載せた肌を誇示するヒーローの絵は幾多の追随者を生み、歴史上の人物や当代の人気役者までが、色彩豊かに飾り立てた肌で描かれるようになりました。獅子、龍、牡丹、大蛇に不動明王など、俠気と剛勇、力強さの象徴として描かれた図柄は、明治初期の禁止令を生き延びて、現代の都会を闊歩する愛好家にも受け継がれています。
